Hepatoblastoma
WHAT IS HEPATOBLASTOMA?
- Hepatoblastoma is commonest type of liver tumour seen in children. It is malignant (cancerous) tumour occurring in infants and children.
WHEN THE DISEASE IS COMMONLY DIAGNOSED?
- The disease is most commonly diagnosed during a child’s first three years of life.
ARE THERE ANY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?
- Patients are usually asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis or may present with an abdominal mass. It can spread to lungs
HOW IT IS DIAGNOSED?
- The most common method of testing for hepatoblastoma is a blood test checking the alpha-fetoprotein level.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR HEPATOBLASTOMA?
- The treatment includes chemotherapy and surgery and the length of treatment depends on the stage and risk of disease.
WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES?
- The outcomes are very good if stage is lower and the child completes the treatment.
